Corn Earworm Early Warning: Time to Check Traps, Change Lures, and Watch for an Increase in Moth Flights

Bill Hutchison, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN

Thus far, we have had a very “normal” Corn Earworm (CEW) season with very low moth flights throughout southern Minnesota. One of our new cooperators, operating two traps in Iowa (near Des Moines and just south of the MN border) has also reported very few CEW. You can view all CEW moth flight data for 2004 and recent years at: http://vegedge.umn.edu/2004/moth.htm. One example for 2003 is shown in the Figure below. As indicated for 2003, the flight may not really take off for southern Minnesota until after August 12th. However, the flight may also begin as early as the last week in July, depending on location. It is therefore not too early to begin to prepare for the annual late-season flight that typically causes the most damage to sweet corn in the upper midwest! In addition to CEW, the 2nd generation flight of European corn borer (ECB) will also be underway by August 1st at most southern MN, and Wisconsin locations. Although degree-days were behind, they have been catching up with the 90F weather this week.

Management Options for 2004: I will be providing more information about CEW and ECB management in the next issue of the newsletter. However, for recent recommendations, you can review the July 25th 2003 issue of the MN Vegetable IPM Newsletter at: http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/mnvegnew/vol5/vol5n4.htm

Thanks again to all the volunteers who are doing an excellent job of monitoring ECB and CEW moth flights, AND sending your data in each week!
