In this Issue: **WEB ONLY VERSION** Corn Earworm and European Corn Borer Alert!! |
Corn Earworm and European Corn Borer Alert!!Suzanne Wold-Burkness and Eric Burkness, University of Minnesota European corn borer and corn earworm moth catches are increasing around the state. In Dodge Center (Dodge Co.) ECB moth catch has risen to 81/night, and 19/night for CEW (hartstack trap), and in Blue Earth (Faribault Co.), CEW trap catches have exceeded 20/night (hartstack trap). In south-central IA (Polk County) a cooperator reported a CEW moth catch of 66/night (hartstack trap). This may be an indication that the main CEW flight is arriving in Minnesota. Based on degree days for ECB, we are just past the peak of the second generation of moths. If you are not currently monitoring ECB and CEW moth flights, now is the time to begin. Special attention should be given to fields that are at the silk stage. Check current ECB and CEW trap catch data for several areas in MN, and Polk Co. IA (CEW), at the Weekly Moth Catch site: http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2005/moth.htm For more information on traps, thresholds, and labeled insecticides, see the 2003 article at:
