Dogwood Borer in Minnesota

Jean Ciborowski

This year, the MDA apple insect pest trapping program included dogwood borer (DWB) (Synanthedon scitula) as part of the group of insects monitored. The graph shows representative locations and numbers of adults trapped. All locations that were trapped for DWB, shown on the graph and those not included on the graph, were positive for this apple pest. The numbers of DWB adults varied from very low to high depending upon the location. For the most part, DWB adult counts were highest between May 15 and June 5, but continued to be found in traps throughout the entire growing season.

Dogwood borer larvae feed on burr knot tissue in the trunk. This type of feeding is characterized by the presence of brown frass on the surface of infested tree trunks. DWB rarely attacks a healthy tree with smooth undamaged bark. Injury is commonly observed on size-controlled rootstocks with burr knots (aggregations of root initials) or a heavily callused graft union. This explains why damage is more common in dwarf plantings.
