Welcome!Bill Hutchison, Dept. of Entomology, University of Minn. Extension, St. Paul , & Jean Ciborowski, Ag. Resources Management and Development Div., MN Dept. of Agriculture, St. Paul, MN Welcome to the first issue of the 2007 Minnesota Fruit & Vegetable IPM News Our primary aim is to alert growers and processors of pest outbreaks, and timely, management recommendations that also reduce environmental and economic risks to growers. When relevant, we also provide newsworthy topics related to biotechnology and specialty crops, emerging pests, invasive species, impacts of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), produce marketing, and articles of broad interest concerning the benefits of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Sustainable Agricultural practices. Much of the pest monitoring data, including the European corn borer and Corn Earworm Moth Flight networks, are provided by many excellent volunteers. Thanks in advance for your help again this year! The MDA would also like to thank the apple and strawberry cooperators who have agreed to participate in the program. Their willingness to cooperate is very much appreciated! MDA and University field staff also collect data at several locations to stay abreast of developing pest infestations. One first for the newsletter, is a “Communications Award for 2007,” from the MN Chapter of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents (www.nacaa.com). Jean and I very much appreciate the contributions of the newsletter team for making this award possible, including: Suzanne Wold-Burkness (Web Implementation), Eric Burkness (Vegetable Insect Pest Survey Coordinator), and Stacy Gulden (Graphic Layout). "One of the reviewers noted: “IPM NEWS is well organized. The headings and titles guide the reader to articles of interest with ease. The ‘In This Issue’ column is very helpful, and has great eye appeal. The short paragraphs and mix of color pictures, charts…makes this a must read.” We hope you will agree. Finally, a big “Thank You” to all the volunteer Growers and Processors who made this award possible by contributing information each week through the monitoring of several pest species at their respective locations. The Minnesota Fruit & Vegetable IPM News is published weekly, or as frequently as possible, from May through August. The News will be posted on the U of MN VegEdge WWW site in html format at www.vegedge.umn.edu/MNFruit&VegNews/mnindex.htm and the MDA web site in PDF format at www.mda.state.mn.us/plants/pestmanagement/ipm/ipmnews.htm on Friday afternoons during the season.
