Vegetable Insect Update - Seed Corn Maggot

Suzanne Wold-Burkness, Eric Burkness, and W.D. Hutchison, Dept. of Entomology, Univ. of Minn.

Delia platura (SCM) female As we mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we are currently testing SCM lures at Rosemount, MN for use as an early-season monitoring tool. Although the lures may attract other species related to SCM, so far we have only detected SCM on the traps. To date, the traps with lures have been much more attractive to SCM than the traps without lures (Table 1). As the season progresses, we will be recording data on the SCM infestation and damage that occurs in a snap bean seed treatment trial at Rosemount. Eventually we will determine whether or not a relationship exists between trap catch and seed damage.
