Strawberry Sampling Data from MDA and Grower CooperatorsMDA’s Strawberry: Weekly Pest Sampling* Data
*Sampling is done using standard sampling techniques for each pest. ** Plants are at about 5% bloom. *** Plants are at about 15% bloom. Data collected at a given cooperator site is a snap-shot” of that particular field and does not represent other fields in that area.
Strawberry Insect Pest Information from Strawberry IPM Project Cooperators:Thaddeus McCamant, Specialty Crops Management Specialist, Northland Community & Technical College Summary: Cold weather from May 11 to May 15 slowed strawberry development. Most metro area strawberry growers will not see full bloom until the fourth week of May. In central and northern Minnesota, cool weather has also slowed canopy development. Plants are still quite short, with few leaves, while flower buds have not yet emerged from the crowns. The cool weather does not appear to have slowed down insect pests as much as the strawberry plants. We have already started catching clipper weevil adults and tarnished plant bug nymphs in southern Minnesota before bloom.
*Plants not checked for tarnished plant bugs or clipper weevils before flower buds emerge from the crown.
