Vegetable Insect UpdateEric Burkness, Suzanne Wold-Burkness, and Bill Hutchison, University of Minnesota European Corn Borer (ECB) & Corn Earworm (CEW): We continue to see increased CEW activity across southern Minnesota (see Fig. 1), but ECB activity is beginning to decline. This week we harvested an untreated sweet corn plot that was planted May 16 at Rosemount, MN. Despite the presence of CEW moth activity during the silking period (2/night), we did not find any CEW larvae. However, 2 ears out of 100 were infested with late-instar ECB. As late-planted sweet corn begins to silk, fields should be monitored using pheromone traps for CEW. Reminder: Check current ECB and CEW trap catch data at the Weekly Moth Catch site: http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2005/moth.htm
Cabbage Looper (CL): Cabbage looper moths continue to be caught in pheromone traps at Rosemount, MN. Plant samples this week indicated infestation level of 40% of plants with CL eggs, and 20% of plants with small CL larvae. Treatment recommendations can be found at http://www.entm.purdue.edu/entomology/ext/targets/ID/index.htm.
