Corn Earworm (CEW) & European Corn Borer (ECB): We continue to see increased CEW activity across southern Minnesota (see Fig. 1). At Blue Earth (Faribault Co.), CEW moth catch has been very high, with 362 moths caught on August 11. We harvested our third date in our sweet corn planting date trial (planted June 2) at Rosemount, MN. We found 2 ears out of 100 with early instar CEW larvae, and 1 ear out of 100 with early instar ECB larvae. The CEW moth catch during the silk stage of this corn was >2/night, and the ECB moth catch was 5-14/night. ECB activity has remained low across the state, with the exception of St. James (Watonwan Co.), where they continue to catch 30-50 moths/night.

Check current ECB and CEW trap catch data at the Weekly Moth Catch site: http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2005/moth.htm

Cabbage Looper (CL): Cabbage looper moths continue to be caught in pheromone traps at Rosemount, MN. Plant samples this week indicated the infestation has declined to a level of 10% of plants with eggs, and 10% of the plants with small larvae.
