Vegetable Insect Update

Eric Burkness, Suzanne Wold-Burkness, and Bill Hutchison, University of Minnesota

Corn Earworm (CEW) & European Corn Borer (ECB): CEW activity across southern Minnesota remains high (see Fig. 1). Blue Earth (Faribault Co.) CEW moth catch ranged from 90-288 from August 18 to August 24. For the same time period at Rosemount the CEW moth catch ranged from 5-18/night, and 25/night in Bagley (Clearwater Co.). Remember that as sweet corn becomes less attractive, other vegetable crops, such as tomatoes, become more attractive to CEW. Treatment recommendations for other vegetable crops can be found at http://www.entm.purdue.edu/entomology/ext/targets/ID/index.htm.

For additional review of CEW recommendations, see the August 25th article by Dr. Eileen Cullen, Dept. of Entomology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, at: http://ipcm.wisc.edu/wcm/pdfs/2005/CullenAug25.pdf

Once again, ECB activity has remained low across the state, and has decreased significantly in most areas.

Stay up to date with CEW and ECB activity by checking the Weekly Moth Catch page on the VegEdge website at: http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2005/moth.htm

Cabbage Looper (CL): Cabbage looper moth catch declined this week in pheromone traps at Rosemount, MN. Plant samples this week indicated that egg lay has decreased, and larval infestation has remained fairly constant with 10-20% of plants infested with early instar cabbage looper larvae.
