Strawberry Update for the Week of May 29th

Thaddeus McCamant, Specialty Crops Management Specialist, Northland Community & Technical College

The strawberry crop matured rapidly in the warm weather over the Memorial Day weekend. Fields in southern Minnesota are past peak bloom. Fields in the northern half of the state vary from 10% bloom to 50% bloom. In fields with frost damage, flower clusters have emerged that were not damaged by the frost. Most of the flowers open now have nice, yellow centers.

The clipper weevils appear to have peaked. Most of the clipped buds I have seen this past week were clipped over a week ago. In most fields, we are finding more adult tarnished plant bugs than nymphs. In fields that were sprayed early for clipper weevil, we are finding no tarnished plant bugs.

The potential for gray mold has been quite low this year. Farms in southern Minnesota have not had a gray mold infection period since the beginning of bloom. The thunderstorms that crossed the state on Memorial Day also did not cause infection periods in most fields, because the plants dried off before nightfall.
