Vegetable Insect Pest Update

Eric Burkness, Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul

Corn Earworm (CEW) activity across southern Minnesota has increased significantly in the last two weeks (see Fig. 1). Pheromone trap catches south of the Twin Cities (Rosemount and Le Sueur) ranged from 23-117 moths/trap/night for August 8-15. For the same time period, near the Iowa border in southern Minnesota (Blue Earth and Dodge Center), pheromone trap catch ranged from 38-724 moths/trap/night (see Fig. 1). As a reminder, once sweet corn becomes less attractive, other susceptible vegetable crops (e.g., tomatoes) may become attractive to CEW. Treatment recommendations for other vegetable crops can be found at http://www.entm.purdue.edu/entomology/ext/targets/ID/index.htm.

For additional review of CEW recommendations, see the August 4th article by Bill Hutchison, titled “Corn Earworm Research Update, and Midwest Pest Alert”, at http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/MNFruit&VegNews/vol3/803zeamap.htm.

Over the last week, trap catches across the state for European corn borer (ECB) have remained below 15 moths/trap/night (see Fig. 2), and the end of the treatment window for 2nd generation larvae is coming to a close. Cumulative degree days for ECB through August 14th were 2097.

Stay up to date with CEW and ECB activity by checking the Weekly Moth Catch page on the VegEdge website at: http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2006/moth.htm
