Vegetable IPM Guides

Midwest Vegetable Production Guide for Commercial Growers—2006.
This annually revised publication provides all current recommendations (pest thresholds, sampling tips, varietal info.), as well as control options and recent pesticide registrations. The guide also includes research-based recommendations for all major weed, insect and disease pests, for all vegetable crops produced in the Midwest Region. The book is edited and reviewed by Extension Specialists in 5 states, including Minnesota , Iowa , Illinois , Indiana and Missouri . The guide for 2006 includes 160 pp., numerous tables and figures, and web sites for additional information. The book is $12.00 (+shipping, tax). We still have a few copies remaining for 2006. To order the book, call (612) 624-4900 or 1-800-876-8636 and ask for BU - 07094. Vegetable Insect Management, 2005, Edited by Drs. Rick Foster ( Purdue Univ. ) and Brian Flood (Del Monte Foods, Inc.).
This is the first revision of the popular 1995 book, which now covers 19 crops, many new color photo's, and contributions from 33 authors throughout the U.S. The price was recently reduced to $59.00 and includes a CD-ROM with many additional resources (+tax and shipping). Just a few examples of new issues covered since the 1995 edition include a new chapter on the impact of Weather and Climate in IPM Decision-making, a discussion of the regional impact of Bt field corn on ECB dynamics (MN, WI) in sweet corn, and IPM options for a new green bean pest, the soybean aphid (since 2000), a vector of several virus pathogens. One of the CD-ROM features is an illustrative tutorial on Insect Migration mechanisms, including the annual summer phenomenon of southern to midwest U.S. migration patterns for several important insect pests. Coming in Late June, 2006: New Pocket Guide from Michigan State.
There is a new entry in the MSU pocket-guide series:  Identifying Natural Enemies in Field Crops , developed by Mary Gardiner w/ assistance of C. DiFonzo (UofM Graduate ), M. Brewer, and T. Noma & the MSU IPM Program. This guide is divided into sections by major groups of natural enemies and spiders: beetles, true bugs, lacewings, predatory flies, parasitoids, spiders and ants. The publication can easily be used in the field with its plastic-coated 3.5" X 5.0" pages.  It is particularly useful for those working with soybean aphid, but is also relevant for use in other field crops as well as vegetable crops and around the home to ID common beneficial insects. This pocket guide would make a great addition to an extension program or for summer scouts/ agribusiness retailers.
