Fairhaven Farm is a cooperator in a research project that Dr. Emily Hoover and Steve Poppe from the University of Minnesota are conducting on annual strawberry production.  Strawberry growers in the Upper Midwest are comfortable with the matted-row system, even with its shortcomings.  The matted-row system plants in May, uses four herbicide applications during the planting year, and two fungicide applications during the fruiting year.  A strawberry production system that plants strawberries in August, using a value-added wool mulch fabric in the row and canola between the rows has been developed.  They have found in previous studies that this weed control system is highly effective for suppressing weed germination thus eliminating herbicide applications.  As a side benefit, because of the wool-mulch, fungicide applications have been eliminated as well. Fairhaven Farm is one of three trial sites comparing the late-planting system to the traditional matted-row system to suggest ways to advance adoption and implementation of the annual production system.  Producers attending the field day will tour the trial site and hear University of Minnesota scientists discuss the annual production system.  In addition, David and Marsha will give a tour of their farm.  Fairhaven Farm produces a variety of crops from strawberries (pre-pick and u-pick) to a wide variety of Minnesota apples.  Also of interest is extensive hail netting to protect the apples.
