Vegetable Insect Pest Update

Eric Burkness & Bill Hutchison, Dept. of Entomology, St. Paul, Minn.

Cabbage looper (CL) populations have remained high throughout the season.  This week in Rosemount (Dakota Co.) 50% of plants were infested with CL larvae.  Larval sizes ranged from small to large; however, we did not detect any CL eggs.

CMV symptoms, click to enlargePotato leafhopper (PLH) populations in snap bean in the Rosemount area appear to be on the decline.  This week sweep samples were at 0.1 PLH/sweep.  However, there have been infestations of soybean aphid detected in snap beans that have led to the transmission of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV).  Because symptoms of CMV (leaf puckering and yellowing) can look similar to PLH damage, you should make sure to verify that you have treatable populations of PLH associated with any foliar symptoms before making PLH treatment decisions.  Currently there are no treatment options to prevent CMV transmission.  For more information on CMV, see the August 3rd web only alert article, at http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/MNFruit&VegNews/Vol4/802SB.htm

The 2nd flight of European corn borer (ECB) is underway across the state.  Last week trap catch in several locations increased significantly (http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2007/MNlist.htm).  The blacklight trap in Steele Co. had the high one night trap catch of >400 on August 2nd.  This should indicate the peak of the 2nd flight of bivoltine ECB and could lead to significant egg lay in susceptible sweet corn (silk stage).  Corn earworm (CEW) trap catch in wire mesh pheromone traps across southern MN have also increased significantly (see graph, below).  All locations have increased to >5 CEW moths/night which we are considering a conservative threshold for susceptible sweet corn at the silk stage (see the web only alert article at http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/MNFruit&VegNews/Vol4/802CEW.htm).  The high one night trap catch of 193 moths on August 5th was recorded at the Blue Earth location.  Progress of CEW trap catch can be viewed on the VegEdge website at http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/2007/CEW.htm.
