European Corn Borer- attacks many crops

In addition to the ECB control necessary for sweet corn, and despite a relatively low ECB moth flight this year, growers with bell peppers and green (snap, lima, etc.) beans should be watching these crops closely. Peppers and beans that are in the peak flower to early fruiting (young peppers or small bean pods) should apply insecticide applications this time of year to protect the fruit. In addition to ECB, corn earworm will also attack bean pods. As with sweet corn, the insecticides with the longest residual control will be most effective. Please review your 1999 Midwest Vegetable Production Guide for current labeled insecticides. For all insecticides, carefully check the pre-harvest interval or re-entry interval requirements. Also, all of the pyrethroid insecticides are Restricted Use Materials.

If you do not have a copy of the 1999 guide, you can still order it ($8.00) by calling the University of Minnesota Extension Service, at: 612-625-8173 (ask for BU-7094-S).
