Where to Order Sweep Nets?

Bill Hutchison, Dept. of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minn.

For many insect pests, including the potato leafhopper and aster leafhopper, the sweep net has become a quick and practical sampling method. There are several sources for ordering sweep nets, and at least two different “styles” (cloth or nylon mesh bags) to choose from. One standard that all nets should adhere to is the 15” diameter opening. Most of our economic thresholds were developed using a 15” diameter sweep net. We have used sweep nets from each of the following sources. The nylon-mesh net, thus far, appears to give us similar estimates (e.g., for leafhoppers) as the muslin cloth net. The nylon net has the advantage of drying out much faster than the muslin cloth net.

Three sources of sweep nets:

1. Ward’s Natural Science (North Carolina): 1-800-962-2660
  • Standard Muslin Net (15”), Aluminum Handle (28”); item #10-W-0560 ($34.50)

2. Gempler’s (WI): 1-800-382-8473
  • Standard Muslin Net (15”), Aluminum Handle; ($37.50), (several styles to choose from)
