Meetings: Farmland Drainage Workshops

Jerry Wright, Agric. Engineer and Irrigation Specialist, University of Minnesota Extension Service, Morris, Minn. (jwright@umn.edu)

Two 2-day Extension-led workshops on farmland tile drainage design and water management will be held in Minnesota during the first week of March:

a) March 5 & 6th at the Southwest State University campus in Marshall, Minn.
b) March 8 & 9th at Red River Inn & Conference Center in Moorhead, Minn.

Contact Jean Spohr at spohrjm@mrs.umn.edu or 320-589-1711 for registration materials at the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center-Morris.
Continuing education credits (6 per day) in the area of soil & water management have been applied for from the Minnesota Certified Crop Advisers board.
Pre-registration is required. Seating is limited. Registration fee is $100 for the 2-days; or $65 for a single day.

The first day of each workshop will cover basic subsurface tile drainage design (planning, tile sizing, lateral spacing, Minnesota Drainage Guide), economics and tile drainage experiences in Ohio. The second day will include an on-hands workup of a tile drainage design and the opportunity to attend two of several concurrent sessions such as “Should I do my own Tiling”; Surveying Basics; Tile Line Assessment; Alternatives & Concerns to Tiling; and UM tile drainage research activities.

These workshops will provide useful information, pipe sizing examples and discussion time for farmers, landowners, tile drainage contractors, crop advisers/consultants, soil water resource technicians, decision-makers and others.

Discussions will be lead by University of Minnesota Extension specialists and researchers; Minnesota Land Improvement Contractors’ Association (MnLICA) tiling contractors; a soil water instructor from MN West Technical College; a farmer from Mapleton, MN; water/land resource manager/attorney; and others. Special speakers will be Larry Brown, Extension Engineer, The Ohio State University, at both locations; and at Moorhead site only Leon Osborne, Meteorologist, University of North Dakota and Michelle Harland, Soil Specialist, Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration, Manitoba Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The workshops are co-sponsored by the University of Minnesota Extension Service, South Dakota Extension Service, North Dakota Extension Service, Minnesota West Community & Technical College-Canby, and Southwest State University in partnership with the Minnesota Land Improvement Contractors Association and the Minnesota and Red River Valley sections of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.
