2000 MN Vegetable Production

Green Pea and Carrot Production Increase, while Sweet Corn and Onion Production Decrease

Sweet Corn for Processing: Minnesota's 2000 production was estimated at 756,760 tons, a decrease of 47,510 tons from last year's production, according to the Minnesota Agricultural Statistics Service. The average yield for the state decreased slightly from the 6.40 tons per acre averaged last year to this year's average of 5.85 tons per acre . Planted acreage was estimated at 136,900 acres compared with 127,400 acres in 1999. Harvested acreage of 129,400 acres is 3,700 acres more than last year. Average value¹ per ton was $67.30 compared with $69.00 last year.

Green Peas for Processing: Minnesota's 2000 production was estimated at 140,240 tons, an increase of 17,400 tons from last year. The average yield of 1.62 tons per acre was a 0.11 ton per acre increase from the previous year. Planted acreage in 2000 was estimated at 95,100 acres which was 4,000 acres more than 1999. Harvested acreage increased to 86,400 acres compared with 81,400 acres in 1999. Average value¹ per ton was $322.00, a $22.00 per ton decrease from last year.

Carrots for Processing: Minnesota's 2000 production was estimated at 23,150 tons, an increase of 5,150 tons from the previous year's production. The average yield of 17.81 tons per acre was a 0.2 ton per acre decrease from 1999. Planted acreage was estimated at 1,600 acres which is 500 acres more than 1999. Harvested acreage of 1,300 acres is 300 acres more than last year . Average value¹ per ton was $65.10 per ton, which was up $0.10 per ton from 1999.

Onions for Fresh Market: Minnesota's 2000 production, including shrinkage and loss, was estimated at 19,000 cwt, a significant decrease from the previous year's production. The shrinkage and loss was estimated at 10,000 cwt for 2000. The average yield for the state was 211 cwt per acre, 70 cwt per acre less than 1999. Planted acreage was estimated at 300 acres compared with 480 acres in 1999. Harvested acreage of 90 acres was 330 acres below the previous year. Average value per cwt was $7.00, up $1.00 per cwt from 1999.

¹ Value includes price received by the producer plus expenses incurred by the processor to get the commodity to the processing plant door.
