Feature Article: Rosemount Experiment Station Insect Pest Update Eric Burkness, Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St.

At the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center, for the week of June 11th: pest pressure remains low for potato leafhopper (PLH) in alfalfa. PLH populations are at 0.34/sweep in 6 inch regrowth. Thresholds for treatment in 6 inch alfalfa are 0.5/sweep. ffff ffff ffff
Striped cucumber beetles have been found in plant samples in the Rosemount and Delano areas. However, most populations have not reached treatable levels (1 beetle/plant). Most cucurbits planted from seed are at the cotyledon to 3rd true leaf stage. ffff ffff ffff
The 1st European corn borer flight has begun. Degree day (DD) accumulations through 6/11/01 are 504. The flight typically begins around 375 DD's. However, due to low night time temperatures (moths typically won't fly with night time temperatures below 50F) moth flight and subsequent capture in black light traps has not occurred until this past weekend at Rosemount. Black light catches for 2 traps at Rosemount from 6/8 to 6/11 averaged 14.5 moths per night. Additional note: growers should be checking fields for cutworm damage/infestation as we've had several calls reporting active infestations in corn in Dakota Co. Please refer to issue 5 of the MN Vegetable IPM newsletter (June 8, 2001) for more information on black cutworm. |
