Snap Bean Insect Update

Bill Hutchison, Eric Burkness, Robert Koch & Patrick O’Rourke, Dept. of Entomology, University of Minnesota

Potato Leafhopper (PLH) and Bean Leaf Beetle (BLB) continue to be active throughout southern Minnesota. PLH counts continue to exceed 3-4/sweep at Rosemount. BLB activity, as measured by estimated foliar defoliation in soybeans is illustrated in the following figure. In snap beans, both pests should be controlled adequately by the 2-3 pyrethroid sprays used for ECB and CEW control. However, for snap beans that are not yet flowering, an additional vegetative spray will likely be needed, particularly for PLH. The first “summer” (F1) generation of BLB adults have been active at Rosemount for about 12 days; feeding could continue for another 2 weeks.
