In this issue: ECB and CEW Moth Flight Update Cowpea Aphids Arrive, in Alfalfa |
European Corn Borer and Corn Earworm UpdateBill Hutchison, Dept. of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul The 2nd generation ECB moth flight is rapidly increasing at many southern Minnesota locations with very high counts at Blue Earth (475/night), and at St. James (200/night) (see Figs.). These early, high counts suggest the potential for a significant, sustained flight this year. As we are only about 100 Degree-days above average, the timing of the flight is on target. Action thresholds for open tassel and/or early silking sweet corn remain conservative, at 4% of the plants infested (egg masses and/or early instar larvae). Proper timing of the first spray is most critical for overall ECB (and corn earworm) control. Fortunately, CEW moth catch remains very low (<3/night; as of Aug. 5th) throughout southern Minn. (see July 25th issue for CEW control). To date, western bean cutworm (WBC) moth counts have also been low this year. *Thanks again to all the volunteer cooperators for providing light trap data! |
